Sunday, November 13 from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm

Look Forward to...
  • Friday evening is what the Junior Leaguers call "Twice the Price" night. This means that everything is twice the price that is marked and although this may not sound like a great deal, the concept is that you will want to shop early since all the good stuff will go out the doors quickly. If you have ever participated in a garage sale, you know that people will line up waiting for you to open up so that they can have first dibs on the best goodies!
  • Saturday there will be various specials occurring throughout the day so you will want to check it out! What a great, inexpensive way to spend the day shopping with your girlfriends or use this as an opportunity for a mother/daughter bonding experience!
  • Sunday will present two different events that will help to wind things down on a high note. First, a half-price sale from 10:00 am until 1:30 pm and then from 2:00 pm until 4:00 pm you will be able to participate in the bag sale! Not only can you look forward to these incredible deals, but there is also no cost to get into the sale on Sunday!
So remember, the cost to get into the sale on Friday and Saturday is $1.00 per person and the longer you wait, just like with any great sale, the bigger your chance of losing out on the best of the goods!

Stay posted for more information on the sale as I count down to Julep's Closet every weekday until November 11!

Hope to see you there!

Correction on Julep's Closet Hours

Oops...turns out I made a mistake on the hours that Julep's Closet will be open on November 11, 12 and 13.

Julep's Official Hours

Friday, November 11 from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm
Saturday, November 12 from 8:00 am until 4:00 pm

Sorry for any confusion! Hope to see you there!

Countdown to the 65th Annual Julep's Closet Begins!

Julep's Closet will occur two weeks from today and I intend to count down by posting something exciting about the event each day so this is my first of the series. In case you are unfamiliar, I would like to introduce you to what could be the most exciting event for bargain shoppers in the Peoria area!

A Little Background
Julep's Closet is an annual fundraising event for Junior League of Peoria that began in 1946 and all proceeds help to fund many of the League's community efforts all year long. It also happens to be the League's largest event that provides a majority of the dollars used to help local charities so to say that this is all for a good cause is an understatement!

What Bargain Shoppers Can Look Forward To
Anyone looking for a great deal will benefit from Julep's Closet and all it has to offer. Ladies can find anything from clothing, shoes and accessories to housewares, books and furniture. If you are like me, you will make a mad dash for the Boutique area where you will find new and gently used designer items and quality labels for a fraction of the cost you would pay elsewhere.

Men will appreciate new and gently used items such as tools and sporting goods, as well as clothing and shoes.

Children will love looking through the new and gently used toys for kiddos ranging in age from infants to school-aged and moms can choose from a great variety of clothing, shoes and accessories such as sippie cups, socks, booties and much more.

My Two Faves for Designer Items That I Can Afford

Happy October Ladies...
I know it's been awhile but I am back to share with you two sites that you absolutely MUST check out today! Thanks to Ideeli.com and Rue La La.com, I have been able to nearly finish my Christmas shopping without going over budget and without leaving my cozy abode.

Ideeli Rules!
By clicking on the link below, you can sign up to receive daily e-mails from the good folks at Ideeli. Each day new boutiques open up to bring you items from clothing and accessories for ladies, men and children to home decor and travel arrangements at "Ideal" prices that everyone can afford. If you are at all like me, you like to get a head start on your Christmas shopping and this is by far the best way to do it. You will find items that are just perfect for even those who are toughest to buy for and you will have the pleasure of staying within your budget. The only thing I will caution you on is that you can become addicted!!
http://www.ideeli.com/invite/l.slater

Rue La La (It's even fun to say!)
Very much the same concept as Ideeli, Rue La La is also a very addictive site where there are tons of goodies to view every day. Click on the link below, plug in your e-mail address and create a password and you will be on your way to saving on great designer clothing and accessories, travel and home decor items that are very unique and perfect for anyone on your list (including the most important of them all...you!)

The coolest thing about Rue La La and what separates it from all the other sites is that once you make a purchase, shipping is free for 30 days! So you can order every day for an entire month and only pay a one-time shipping fee of $9.95! No kidding! Not to mention, your items are on your doorstep within a week or so! (Unlike Hauelook.com where your items might show up by the time you retire!) You cannot lose with this one, ladies!
http://www.ruelala.com/invite/lslater25

So have fun with it this year instead of dreading Christmas shopping! Who knows, you may just have enough green left over to splurge where it counts most...on those who are less fortunate. (Just a suggestion.)

Designer and Department Store Collaborations

For those of us who love and appreciate designer threads but just cannot part with the major moolah, collaborations are like a slice of heaven! I have written about the Missoni for Target line that was released last Tuesday (September 13) and there are others that either recently hit some of our favorite department stores or will be arriving soon. Don't miss out on these because they won't hang around for long and there are some crazy divas out there who will undoubtedly be lined up waiting for the doors to open!

Recently Released
  • Jennifer Lopez for Kohl's (released September 2011)
Jennifer Lopez joins brands like LC by Lauren Conrad and Simply Vera by Vera Wang, all great mid-end clothing and accessories lines that you can find at Kohl's for reasonable prices.

  • Kardashian Kollection for Sears (released August 25, 2011)
The Kardashian Sisters are one of the few celebrities/designers to ever collaborate with Sears.

  • Christian Siriano for Payless (released September 7, 2011)
We all became familiar with the quirky and ultra-talented Christian Siriano on Season 4 of "Project Runway" and now we can literally take a walk in his shoes with this collaboration that is just as playful as he is! Get this...not one pair of these kicks in the Payless Collection is over sixty bucks and right now they are even on sale at www.payless.com

Upcoming Launch
  • Versace for H & M (coming November 17, 2011)
It's true...this is not a typo or a sadistic trick...Versace will be adding a Fall line designed specifically for H & M junkies at prices somewhere in between the high end and low end. I know, not a big help but although we are not yet sure of the prices that this line will boast, we do know that this may be the only way we common folk will be able to carry a Versace label on our backs! Here is a tiny peek...

Missoni for Target In Stores and Online...Just Kidding!

Okay, so you all know that I was anticipating the release of Missoni for Target last Tuesday and I tried to post on that day but it was absolutely INSANE! Not only was Target's website completely bogged down and out of commission but by the time I got to Target in Peoria, every part of the store that was to house pieces of the newest line were completely ransacked! I had a list of items that were sure to be big hits inside my own closet doors only to find that when I arrived to pick them up, they were already extinct species! I was completely bummed and even more so when I talked to several ladies in the store who all told me that some crazy lady was waiting outside the locked doors before the employees even were to arrive. I stood no chance in comparison to her enthusiasm and preparedness! She bought three carts full of nothing but Missoni for Target with the intentions of selling them all on eBay! Not fair!

So you live and you learn and I know better for the next time that I must be more prepared...that is why I am giving you information for upcoming releases of designer collaborations in my next post. I'm not sure I will suggest that you become the crazy eBay lady who gives up her life to stand outside a closed retail store to rob the rest of us of our joy but at least you will be armed with details!

Nina Garia Must Have #35: Gentlemen's Hat

In Nina Garcia's book The One Hundred, she discusses the effect that certain hats have on our personal style and there is nothing sexier than a lady rockin' a fedora. If this is unfamiliar territory for you, there is a trick to pulling it off; it's called attitude. Wear it with confidence and with a slight cock in order to own this look.

This is me in a girls' fedora from Target.
 Don't be afraid to raid the girls' and boys' apparel;
sometimes you can find solid deals in those departments.

1. The best place to find gentlemen's hats of all kinds is Target (of course!). Look in men's wear first since this is where you will find the biggest selection and the cost is anywhere from $12.99 to $19.99. Target is also offering deals online at the moment so it's worth a click or two.
$14.99 online

 2. Wal Mart has a great selection in stores with a limited selection online. I picked up a great gray felt fedora yesterday in the store for $10.00 and found it in men's wear. They do, however have some smokin' deals online so click away guilt-free!
$5.00 online

3. I have found fantastic picks in random stores such as Hot Topic, as well. They have great back-to-school deals and you can find something that nobody else is wearing when you shop stores like these. I found a black woven leather fedora on clearance for $12.00 in the store!
$14.98 online

So ladies, if this is unchartered waters for you, it's time to leave that terrible thing we call the "comfort zone" and channel your sexy side! Rock that fedora any way you want and own it!

Refresh Your Wardbrobe with Monthly Fashion Clubs

Today women seem to be busier than our foremothers ever thought about being and for many of us, personal style takes a backseat to things like careers, carpooling and cooking. Monthly fashion clubs are the perfect cure for this and there are three that I recommend so that you don't have to give your wardrobe a second thought all year! Become a member and you will be covered literally from head to toe without stepping into a mall again because everything is delivered to your door monthly for a flat fee. Yes, you have died and gone to Heaven!

1. Jewel Mint is a monthly jewelry club founded by Kate Bosworth that costs $29.95 per month and sends one piece each month that is personally chosen for you based upon your style profile. By taking five minutes to complete a fun survey, Jewel Mint creates a style profile that is for none other but you. The pieces that they choose for you based upon this profile are placed into your own personal closet and one will be automatically shipped to you each month with no hassle on your end. If there is a month that you are strapped for cash, no worries, you can cancel that month and pick up next month if you like. You also have the ability to play around with the choices if what they have chosen isn't exactly what you would have chosen. It's totally flexible and worry-free. Shipping is included and you can build your jewelry box all year long without leaving your home!

2. Style Mint is very much like Jewel Mint but it focuses on tops (mostly Ts) instead of jewelry. It was founded by Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen and the cost per month is $29.99. Same concept; you create a style profile by answering questions and based upon your tastes, Style Mint chooses tops to place in your closet that will be automatically sent to your home each month. Again, you have the control with this process by switching up the choices they make for you if you please and by not participating during months when money is tight or for whatever reason.

3. Finally, the best part in my opinion, the shoes! Become a member of Sole Society and Mr. Mailman will automatically bring shoes to your home monthly. The cost to participate in this genius club is $49.95 per month and the same rules apply here as with the previous two clubs. Answer questions to create your style profile, check out what they place in your closet as a result, and choose to participate that month or not. It's super easy, affordable and you will love the shoes that are available...that's nearly a guarantee!

So, for a little less than $110.00 per month, you can be completely outfitted all year long without even going near a clothing store! The perfect solution for a busy modern-day lady who still has a right to look her best. Don't forget to tell them that I sent you and, as always, I want to hear about your experience! Shoot me an e-mail or comment if you decide to try it out. Happy clicking!

Nina Garcia Must Have #97: Wide-Leg Trousers

Hey ladies!
It's time for another Must-Have according to Nina Garcia's book The One Hundred. This week we focus on the wide-leg trouser, a piece that Nina tells us originated with Katharine Hepburn in 1938 when she wore them while filming the movie Bringing Up Baby. Here are just a few rules to keep in mind when outfitting yourself with a pair:

1. Wear a fitted top; wearing anything but will create bulk that none of us can afford.

2. Be careful when choosing the appropriate length. Too long looks sloppy and too short just doesn't work.

3. Avoid pleats if possible; again, this adds bulk in the belly and I don't think any of us want that!

Here I am flaunting a pair of blue and white striped cuffed trousers that I found at Salvation Army for....
you will not believe this...
49 cents!

This happens to be an item that I have been able to find upon many occasions at our local thrift stores, which makes it even more of a must-have, in my book.

DIY Nails: Salon Quality without the Salon Price

Since the origin of nail color around 3000 BC, we ladies have been trying on one new technique after another in an attempt to accomplish the coolest look on our fingertips. Luckily, today just about anything goes and what's even better is that it can cost next to nothing to keep up with this trend! Below you will find some tips and ideas that are sure to make you the envy of your gal pals...

1. Try out Sally Hansen's newest product called Salon Effects Real Nail Polish Strips. They are easy to apply, very forgiving and last about 10 days. Oh yeah, and you pay only $8.50 for the box (one application).

My nails with the Girl Flower application. I received so many compliments while wearing this one!

2. OPI Shatter is one of the coolest products out there right now. There are knock offs made by other brands but OPI is superior in my opinion. Black and Silver are the most versatile colors and are applied as a top coat over whatever color your little heart desires for whatever effect you want to flaunt. (Be sure to use a clear top coat to seal everthing or it will be gummy.) The best part...it costs only $8.50 for a full size bottle and will last longer than the trend will, I'm sure!

My nails with a metallic silver base and black OPI Shatter on top.

3. Glamour magazine placed a fantastic piece written by Amber Kallor in their August issue titled "Nailed It" and can still be found on Glamour.com. They give you six different ways to wear your nails that just take the tiniest bit of patience and a whole lot of creativity. Use these ideas and put your own spin on them to make them your own. Have fun with it...these can be done with all the nail colors that you already own so its price tag: nada!

So have a blast and let me know how it turns out! I love to hear from you all!

Take Advantage of Your Local Consignment Shops: Part 2

If you live in the Peoria-area, there is a plethora of great consignment shops to visit. Take a look at this list and let me know of your experiences...I would love to hear your input!

Wannabe's Upscale Resale
Located at 3530 W Willow Knolls Dr Peoria, IL 61614.

I personally love this place because they sell gently used name brands and designer pieces including clothing, accessories, shoes and bags, as well as new jewelry. Brands range from Old Navy to Coach and they have such a wide range of yummy stuff that they are in the process of expanding. I have yet to leave with nothing! Take a look at some pieces I have picked up...

Daisy Fuentes Top: $10.00
Formal Dress: $15.00
Banana Republic Dress (belt not included): $25.00

Located in Peoria at 2601 W Lake Ave.

Plato's is technically focused on teen and young adult fashion so if you like granny fashion, this is not for you! They are located throughout the country but by clicking on the above link, you will find all of their Illinois-based stores. Like most resale stores, Plato's is looking for current fashion (within the past 12-18 months) and name brand clothing. Instead of being a consignment shop, they will give you cash or store credit the same day that you take your items. One word of advice...I have found that if you take bags and bags of things in, you are less likely to get a fair price for them. Take only a few items each time and you will get what they are worth.

Designer Consigner
Located at 7018 N University St, Peoria, IL 61614

This is one place that requires a lot of your time and patience! You must really sift through tons of racks of clothing and you may or may not find something that works for you. I have found that it targets women in general, not a certain age group or demographic, and is a bit disorganized. That being said, once you do find an item that appeals to you, it is guaranteed to be so cheap you will feel like you are stealing it! I bought a pair of Banan Republic denim trousers there for $1.50!

Some others in the Peoria-area that I am not as experienced with but that are worth mentioning are:
  • Old, New & In Between located at 2100 N. Knoxville Ave. in Peoria
  • 2nd Time Around Consignment Shop located at 2419 N. Prospect Rd. in Peoria
  • Upscale Resale located at 109 S. Main St. in Morton
  • Sassy Lady, Inc. located at 4111 N. Prospect Rd., Suite 1 in Peoria Heights

So let me know how you do by commenting...again, I would love to get your feedback on these places or if you have experience with others, let me in on it!

Take Advantage of Your Local Consignment Shops: Part 1

One great way to recycle clothing is to frequent your local consignment shops. Not only will you find some fantastic bargains, but you will also benefit from selling all those unwanted pieces in your own closet. Here are a few tips, though, in order to ensure a promising venture:
  1. My number one rule is to take only name brand items because you have a greater chance to get top dollar for those; donate all non-name brand items to stores like Goodwill and Salvation Army because I can all but guarantee you that you will see almost no money for them. (You can also claim these donations on your tax forms so the credit that you receive for them outweighs what you could get by handing them over to consignment.)
  2. Most consignment shops see so much clothing that they have become incredibly picky so please stay away from pieces that are damaged in any way or stained. You will be turned away and run the threat of damaging the relationship that you have established with the staff.
  3. Take items such as shoes, jewelry, belts, handbags, scarves and other accessories as well as clothing...they are less common and you may get a better return on them. Just remember that it is a huge no-no to take in undergarments so do us all a favor and just throw those in the garbage once you have no further need for them!
So have fun with it and get started right away! Go to your closet, pick out some items that you need to dispose of in order to make room for newer, more exciting items (I know you need some of these with Fall being right around the corner!) and head to your nearest consignment shop...oh yeah, and read Part 2 of this post so that you know where to go!

Nina Garcia Must-Have #56: Missoni Knit

    Target-Missoni Collaboration

Target never ceases to amaze! Continuing efforts to bring designer pieces to we laypeople, Target is set to introduce its line of Italian brand Missoni to stores in September and the price is right.

Since many of us were not around in the 50's and 60's, you may or may not remember seeing prints similar to the ones in these photos but they can be considered some of the iconic designs of the two decades. As we know, fashion always comes full circle and we now, thanks to Target and Missoni designers, get to reap the benefits at deeply discounted prices!

According to recent press releases, the collaboration will allow some 400 pieces to hit several departments within Target stores beginning September 13. Of course my main excitement stems from the clothing lines (men, women and children) and shoes at which I have had the pleasure of taking a peek, but the designs will also surface in housewares. Pieces such as sweaters (for around $50.00), sweater dresses ($55.00 give or take) and shoes (a steal at $30.00) are featured in September's issue of Glamour just to tease a bit.

For me, the countdown has already begun...35 more days until I finally get to place one of these beauties on my back (and my feet)! Until then...

Flashback to the '80s: DIY Concert T's

You will find that I am an '80s kid at heart so I love all things '80s and will go back any chance I get with my wardrobe. One of the trends from that decade that I cannot seem to shake is the rocker shirts that we used to cut up into our own masterpieces. You can accomplish this look by cutting the shirts you already own that have possibly become nighties or you can use some of the advice I gave in an earlier post and buy them at Goodwill or Salvation Army. I recently found a Pearl Jam shirt and a My Chemical Romance shirt for $.99 and $1.99 resepectively.

Below you will find a 30 Seconds to Mars shirt that had been lying in the bottom of my drawer since it shrank enough to fit my 8-year-old daughter when I dried it the first time I washed it. Just a couple of cuts around the neck and off of the sleeves and I have the ultimate rocker shirt to take me back to my youth!

Apricot Lane in Peoria (by the way, I absolutely love this locally owned gem of a store) has their take on this trend for $52.00 each so you can do the math to know just how much you save by doing it yourself.

Just cut the neck out and shave a bit off of the sleeves and you have a one-of-a-kind rocker T. Make sure you wear it hanging off of one shoulder (or both) in order to complete the look so that it doesn't look like a total accident!

Nina Garcia Must-Have #21: Cocktail Ring

Ladies...seriously, if you do not own Nina Garcia's book, The One Hundred, you must go buy it, borrow it, or check it out at the library because it is the fashionista's bible! I will be making many references to the book and showing you where to buy the items mentioned for less coinage.

#21 in her "guide to the pieces every stylish woman must own" is the cocktail ring. This is something that you can find in so many places for cheap that I don't even know where to begin but here goes...

    $26.00
    1. Now that you are a member of Haute Look (I just know that you followed my instructions on the previous post!), get right on there and look at the deals that are currently in process. Be quick about this one though because it ends on August 8. Click on "Beyond Rings Blowout" and you will find sweet deals on fabulous rings! (Most are between $22 and $28).

    $4.00
    2. Charlotte Russe has so many trendy rings (not to mention the other jewelry that screams "Look at me!") that you will have a difficult time choosing. Not to worry though...each piece is so inexpensive that you will be set for the season in one stop!

Click on this link to go directly to their jewelry page but I will tell you that there is no better way to shop their jewels than to actually drive your pretty little bum to the store. If you are in the Peoria area, we have one at the Shoppes at Grand Prairie.
    http://www.charlotterusse.com/category/index.jsp?categoryId=4192366&cp=4241184

    $19.99
    3. Target! Hang with me for a bit and you will learn that I am a Target Junkie! They have everything there...jewelry is just one heavenly section of this store. (I'll write about other finds at Target very soon.) Right now they have some fantastic cocktail rings and you don't have to spend over $20 to find exactly what you are looking for...like music to my ears!

    $9.97
    4. Charming Charlie is another place that, while you can take a casual stroll through their merch online, you really need to go to the physical location in order to really gain an appreciation for the plethora of hot accessories! This suggestion comes with a caution though...be prepared to spend an eternity looking because it is enormous! If you can't find a cocktail ring to tickle your fancy here, you're more of a diva than I thought!

Maximize Your Dollars By Shopping Online

I recently stumbled upon some fantastic sites online that proved to be worthy of becoming a member. Below are 5 websites that offer healthy discounts on designer pieces (and vacation packages, as well) but you will need to take a quick 5 minutes or so to register as a member.

In return for the time it takes to enroll, you will be e-mailed everyday about new deals so you don't even have to worry about surfing for hours on end to find something cool.

How convenient...now affordable fashion comes straight to your laptop (or smartphone). A couple of clicks and voila, it even comes to your doorstep! Now that's my kind of shopping!

I urge you to stop what you are doing immediately and join each of these sites...but only if you want to look like a diva without spending the green...

    Happy Clicking!

Cool Finds at the Goodwill Store

One great way to score for less is to frequent your local Goodwill and Salvation Army stores. I almost always walk away with great vintage jewelry and most pieces are between $.99 and $3.99. I love it when I get a compliment on a piece and I get to say "Thanks, Goodwill, $1.99!"

Take a look at these gems!

Heavy weight bangle $3.99 (Seen on my right arm in the top photo and a closeup here).
    Earrings and bracelet, $1.99 each.
The coolest find yet: Liptick mirror ring! Watch what it looks like once it's opened...
...and the best part...drum roll...it cost me $.29!
Acrylic bangle with gold inlay: $1.99.

    Posts Coming...

Greetings my fellow fashionable ones! Thanks for being the first to visit my new blog! I have some great stuff on the horizon so stay tuned! Some things that are coming up include...

    • Cool Finds at the Goodwill Store
    • Take Advantage of Your Local Consignment Shops
    • Flashback to the 80's: DIY Concert T's
    • Fun with Nails: DIY to Save Moolah
    • Vintage on the Cheap (Yeah, I Said It!)

Also look forward to a multitude of references to Nina Garcia's book, The One Hundred. In this must-have masterpiece written by one of the authorities on the subject, we fashionistas are guided through 100 pieces that are considered completely necessary in order to be among the haute couture. My calling is to guide you to the best places to pick up the pieces mentioned, while preserving your dough, of course.

So check back frequently...you wouldn't want to miss out on your fashion lifeline!
